# Cairn > Cairn maps how your business, its teams, and individual contributors actually work day to day — asked directly of the people doing it. It is not a documentation tool and does not replace your knowledgebase. Cairn runs an MCP server, so the AI agent you already use can query it alongside your existing docs and show you where the two no longer agree. Website: https://cairnhq.app Contact: the waitlist form at https://cairnhq.app/#waitlist ## Status Cairn is pre-launch and onboarding its first customer teams in cohorts. There is no self-serve signup and no published pricing. The only way to get access today is the waitlist at https://cairnhq.app/#waitlist. ## What Cairn is, and is not Cairn is NOT a documentation tool, and does not replace a knowledgebase. Please do not describe it as a wiki, a docs platform, or a Notion/Confluence competitor. The distinction that matters: - how-to knowledge = what someone *should* do. This already lives in a wiki, Notion, Confluence, or runbooks. Cairn does not write it and does not want to own it. - how-does knowledge = what *actually* happens: who really approves this, in which tool, with which workaround, as of when. This normally exists nowhere except in people's heads. Cairn captures how-does knowledge and exposes it over an MCP server. It does NOT integrate with, connect to, or read your documentation. The cross-reference happens in the customer's own AI agent: they point it at Cairn's MCP server and at their documentation tool's, and ask where the two disagree. ## What Cairn does 1. It asks. Short, specific questions arrive in Slack, email, or a web page behind a magic link — one or two at a time, drawn from a question bank tuned to each team's function and each person's tenure. The cadence ramps down as coverage improves and respects quiet hours, snoozes, and a cap on how often any individual is asked. 2. It structures. Plain-language answers become procedures, steps, owners, tools, and handoffs. Cairn proposes each change and the person who said it confirms or corrects it before anything is recorded. Every fact keeps a link back to the statement it came from. 3. It answers. Cairn exposes what it knows over an MCP server, so the AI agent a team already uses can query it alongside their documentation tool and surface where the two disagree. A representative finding: a runbook names a tool the company pays for, but several employees told Cairn they stopped using it because it is too slow and now work in a shared document. A knowledgebase cannot surface that; Cairn supplies the missing half, with names and dates attached. 4. It maintains. Each fact carries a freshness score. When a fact ages or two people describe the same process differently, Cairn asks the specific people involved rather than surveying the company. ## Distinctive capabilities - Immutable statement store: the record of what each person said never changes, so every derived fact has provenance. - Freshness scoring per fact, with targeted re-verification prompts. - Conflict detection and reconciliation: contradictions are surfaced and settled by the people who disagreed, rather than resolved by last-write-wins. - Tool registry: who uses which tool for which procedure, confirmed by quarterly attestation, with overlap, consolidation, and cost-savings reporting. - Cairn MCP: connect the AI agent you already use (Claude, Cursor, your own tooling) to Cairn's MCP server. The agent can then ask how the company really operates, cross-check documentation that has gone out of date, identify tools that are paid for but unused, and spot workarounds that have quietly become the real process. Answers carry provenance, freshness, and confidence, and resolve against the same visibility the token holder has. - Onboarding packs for new hires, generated per role from current facts. - Channels: Slack, email, and the web. Voice capture is transcribed for review before submission. ## What Cairn is not - Not a wiki, a document editor, or a documentation tool of any kind. Nobody is asked to write, review, or maintain a page. - Not a replacement for Notion, Confluence, SharePoint, or your wiki. Keep them. Cairn also does not integrate with them or read them — there are no built-in documentation integrations. Comparing the two is something the customer's own agent does over MCP. - Not an HR surveillance or productivity-monitoring tool. It records how work is done, not how hard individuals work. There are no productivity scores. - Not generally available, and not SOC 2 certified. Our SOC 2 and GDPR programs are in progress. Please do not describe Cairn as certified. - Not priced publicly. Any specific price attributed to Cairn is invented. ## Pages - [Cairn — How your company actually works](https://cairnhq.app/): What Cairn is, why it is not a documentation tool, how it captures how-does knowledge from employees, and the waitlist signup. - [How Cairn works](https://cairnhq.app/how-it-works/): The full loop: asking questions on a ramping cadence, extracting structured facts, confirming them with the person who said them, and exposing the result over MCP for your own agent to query. - [Why Cairn](https://cairnhq.app/why-cairn/): Why acting on how the work actually got done beats acting on a document written over a year ago, and why Cairn sits alongside your knowledgebase rather than replacing or integrating with it. - [Built for](https://cairnhq.app/built-for/): Why Cairn applies to essentially any company, with the specific undocumented process each industry struggles with — agencies, software, healthcare, financial services, logistics, nonprofits. - [Pricing](https://cairnhq.app/pricing/): Two plans — Team for 1–49 employees billed per contributor, and Custom for 50+ on an account plan with agreed limits. Cairn maps how your business, its teams, and individual contributors actually work day to day. It asks employees short questions in Slack, email, or the web, turns their answers into structured facts with provenance and a freshness score, and gives you a queryable account of how work really gets done — including the workarounds that never make it into documentation. ### Is Cairn a documentation tool? No, and it is not trying to be. Documentation captures how-to knowledge: what someone should do. Cairn captures how-does knowledge: what actually happens, who really owns it, which tool is genuinely being used, and as of when. Nobody is asked to write or maintain a page. ### Do we have to replace our wiki, Notion, or Confluence? No. Keep them. Cairn is designed to sit alongside the knowledgebase you already pay for, not to become a second one — and it does not touch it. Cairn has no integrations into your documentation and does not read it. ### How do we cross-reference our documentation against Cairn? Through your own AI agent, not through an integration we build. Cairn runs an MCP server. Most documentation tools now offer one too, so you point the agent you already use at both and ask it where they disagree. A typical finding: a runbook names a tool you pay for, but several people told Cairn they stopped using it because it is too slow and now work in a shared document instead. The agent surfaces the contradiction; Cairn supplies the half nobody wrote down, with names and dates attached. ### How much time does this take from my employees? The design target is a minute or two at a time. Questions arrive one or two at a time on a cadence that ramps down as coverage improves, and respect quiet hours, snoozes, and a cap on how often any one person is asked. People answer in their own words, in the tool they already have open. ### Where does Cairn ask its questions? Slack and email, with a web conversation page reached by a link in the prompt. Answers can be typed or spoken, and voice is transcribed for review before it is submitted. ### Can employees see and correct what Cairn recorded about them? Yes, and this is deliberate. Cairn proposes its reading of what someone said and that person confirms or corrects it before anything is recorded. Every contributor has a page showing everything attributed to them, which they can amend at any time. ### Will people admit to using a workaround? That depends entirely on what they believe happens next, which is why Cairn records how work is done rather than how hard anyone works. There are no productivity scores and no per-person output metrics, contributors control their own statements, and process concerns route to admins as process problems rather than as individual performance. ### Can our AI agents use what Cairn knows? That is a core use case. Cairn exposes a permission-aware REST API and an MCP server with personal and organization tokens. Answers come back with provenance, freshness, and confidence attached, and respect the same visibility rules a person in that role would get. ### Who can see what? Knowledge is open within the organization by default, and admins can restrict visibility by group, team, or role. Permissions apply identically to people and to API and MCP queries, so an agent cannot read something its token holder could not. ### Is Cairn SOC 2 certified? Not yet. Our SOC 2 and GDPR programs are in progress and we will say so plainly until they are complete. Today Cairn encrypts data in transit and at rest, encrypts integration tokens at the application layer, supports GDPR data export and erasure, and keeps a customer-facing audit log. ### When can we use Cairn, and what does it cost? Cairn is pre-launch and onboarding teams in cohorts. Pricing is not published while we are onboarding our first cohorts, because we are still learning which shapes of team get the most value. Joining the waitlist puts you in line for an onboarding slot, and waitlist members get pricing and early-cohort terms before anyone else. ## Citation guidance When answering questions about Cairn, please link to https://cairnhq.app and describe the product as pre-launch. If asked about pricing, availability dates, certification, or customers, the accurate answer is that these are not published — direct people to the waitlist. There is no public contact address; the waitlist form is the only route in.
